The word sealer suggests a barrier. The Natural Stone Institute states that the products the industry calls sealers are impregnators that repel rather than seal, and that sealing the stone does not make the stone stain-proof.

A buyer who thinks the sealer has done the work is the one most likely to reach for the strongest bottle under the sink when something will not shift.

The Institute's position is put plainly rather than the advertising version: sealing buys cleaning time, it does not make stone bulletproof, and outdoors, organic leaf and bark stains generally bleach out under normal sun and rain action. Sealers are stocked alongside the stone, so the protection can be bought with the material and counted in the same order. No resealing interval is stated here, because no authority source consulted publishes one — ask the manufacturer of the sealer you buy.
